The School of Salamanca was an intellectual movement in sixteenth century’s Spain. But what remains of it, and does it still matter for the challenges of our present and future? This was the central theme of the congress marking the fifth centenary of Francisco de Vitoria’s appointment to the cátedra de prima theologia at the University of Salamanca in 1526.
En un siglo lleno de grandes cambios y acontecimientos, Vitoria se planteó algunas de las cuestiones más espinosas de la época: ¿Tienen los indios derecho a sus tierras?, ¿son válidas sus leyes?, ¿es justa la conquista? Aunque su análisis tiene un innegable merito intelectual, desde una perspectiva actual podríamos sentir que estas preguntas son, en sí mismas, ofensivas. Replantearse el mito historiográfico de Francisco de Vitoria implica replantearse también los mitos del origen moderno de los derechos humanos y el derecho internacional.
